A Superfood is any food that is high in enzymes, phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals, Chlorophyll, and antioxidants. Most fruits and vegetables are super foods.

We have recieved queries from our readers about adding boosters to their juice to make the ultimate super food drink.



Trying to find an appropriate time to stuff a couple of teaspoons of blue green algae into your mouth can be difficult, not to mention wheat grass, barley grass, spirulina, and chlorella. However, we at juicing shack decided to make these super food juice combinations -- (our inspiration -the Naked Juices available on supermarket shelves) . We hope that with these super food juices you get ultimate nutrition with ultimate taste.

When we talk about super foods "green foods," we’re referring to a group of foods that includes young cereal grasses like barley grass and wheat grass, as well a blue-green algae. Nutritionally, they are close cousins to dark green leafy vegetables, but offer far greater levels of "nutrient density." In other words, an ounce of these concentrated green super foods contains much more of the beneficial phytonutrients found in an ounce of green vegetables.


Here are some juice boosters to add to your drink to make it an ultimate super food machine:

Blue-Green Algae : Spirulina, Chlorella and more


The single-celled plants known as blue-green algae (BGA) are sold in health food stores as superior sources of protein, chlorophyll, carotenoid antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and disease-preventive phytonutrients. There are several types of Blue green Algae, the most popular being spirulina and chlorella. Spirulina is being developed as the "food of the future"because of its amazing ability to synthesize high-quality concentrated food. Spirulina is a form of chlorophyll from the blue green algae family. This super food has the most remarkable concentration of functional nutrients ever known in food - animal or plant. It is also anti fungal and antibacterial. The best way to take spirulina is to have it with your favorite juice recipes.However it may just change the color of your drink to green. It is better to disguise its taste with a juice rather than consuming it with plain water.



Wheat grass juice:


Wheatgrass juice is a specific super food which can assist in fighting a whole range of chronic ailments. It may not be to everyone’s taste but including it in a juice is an easy way to receive its benefits as a super food. The chlorophyll content(chlorophyll is the pigment that gives plantstheir green color) in wheatgrass is extremely beneficial. wheatgrass is available in the powder form in most health stores. However the benefits of fresh wheatgrass juice are uncomaparable. You can get wheat grass in powder or tablet form. Dried wheat grass is certainly easier to handle than fresh, which must be juiced. However, fresh grass juice contains healthful enzymes not found in dried grass powder, and is likely to be higher in just about every phytonutrient found in wheat grass. At the early grass stage of their growth, wheat grass is closer to vegetables than grains in composition. This is important to note because while many people discourage eating wheat and wheat products, wheat grass is an excellent addition to your diet. If you decide to juice wheatgrass you must invest in a specialized juicer. Wheat grass shots are available at Whole foods, some juice bars and at times even at local farmers markets.Remember that this is not the most palatable drink and adding it to your favorite juice may be the best way to go if you are new to juicing.


Echinacea:



Echinacea extract is a plant extract that has been used for centuries for its immune system boosting capabilities. After adding the Echinacea extract stir your super food juice and drink immediately to ensure you receive the highest level of vitamins. Again this super food is available at health food stores.



Aloe Vera:


Aloe vera has immense immunity- boosting antiviral and antiseptic properties and is recommended for joint pains and irritable bowel syndrome. When using garlic in your juice recipes start of with small amounts of garlic and build up the amount depending on your taste. Even adding one clove of garlic can be very beneficial.Allicin in garlic is known for its antibacterial properties. Most of the modern research on garlic has concentrated on its ability to lower cholesterol and blood pressure as well as offering protection against stroke and heart disease.



Probiotics:

These are beneficial bacteria for the digestive tract. Good for stomach upsets and digestive disorders. Essential during a course of antibiotics. Add it to your smoothies or juices.


Power Green super food juice:
Serves: 4


Ingredients:

2 apples

8 oz pineapple

1 kiwi

15 oz broccoli

handful of spinach leaves

1/2 bunch parseley

1/2 " ginger

1 clove garlic

1 mango

1 banana

1/2 tsp spirulina powder

1/2 tsp wheatgrass powder.

Method:

Keep the ingredients refrigerated before juicing. This will help you serve a delicious cold juice. Juice the apples, pineapples, kiwi, broccoli, spinach, parseley, ginger, garlic (you could use odorless garlic powder for this recipe if fresh is not available) in a juicer. In a blender mix this juice with mango pieces and a banana. Add the spirulina powder and the wheatgrass powder or juice. This is very close to the Naked Juice (Green machine) available on the supermarket shelves. If you do not have some of the ingredients you could substitute or simply avoid them in this recipe. Be sure to drink your Superfood smoothie cold by using cold ingredients to start with. This Green Juice Superfood makes great breakfast or lunch meal.
